Columbia, Mo. - The Columbia College Cougars swept the William Woods Owls in straight sets tonight, 25-6, 25-18, 25-13. The win moves Columbia to 5-0 on the season, while William Woods falls to 0-1.
The Cougars never trailed in the match. Columbia jumped out to an early lead in the first set behind kills from Rowan Carr and Alayna Backes, then pulled away for good on a run capped by back-to-back kills from Ana Cuartero, cruising to a 25-6 win in the opener while hitting .591 as a team.
William Woods battled harder in the second set, trading points with the Cougars through the middle stretch and pulling within four at 12-8, but Columbia answered with a 13-9 scoring run to take the second set, 25-18.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with the Owls hanging around into the middle of the frame before a service run from Rita Marques helped the Cougars pull away for the 25-13 sweep.
Columbia finished the match hitting .309 as a team on 33 kills with just eight errors, while holding William Woods to a -.083 attack percentage. The Cougars also won the battle at the net, out-blocking the Owls 10-4.
