Volleyball picks up two wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fulton, Mo. - The Cougar volleyball squad earned a pair of victories over College of the Ozarks (Mo.) and William Woods (Mo.) University on Tuesday night. Columbia overcame a 2-0 deficit in their first match against College of the Ozarks and followed that with a 3-0 win over William Woods in their second match of the night. With the two victories, the Cougars improve to 12-4 overall on the year.

In game one against the Bobcats, Columbia used a 6-0 run to grab a 12-9 advantage and eventually took a 22-19 lead late in the set. However, the Ozarks would come back to take the final six points and claim a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cougars trailed for much of game two and were unable to overcome an eight-point deficit after a 5-1 run by the Bobcats put the Bobcats in command 19-11. Game three was another tight affair, but a 6-0 run by Columbia proved to be the difference as the Cougars stayed alive with a 25-18 win. The two teams would trade runs in game four and Columbia held a 21-20 advantage late in the set before back-to-back service aces by Paula Rosa put the game away and forced a fifth game. The Cougars carried the momentum into the deciding game and jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back from there. Sarah Schwentker helped Columbia complete comeback with four kills in the final game.

Rosa and Schwetnker led the Cougar attack with 17 and 18 kills respectively. Four players finished with at least 12 digs for Columbia, led by Jordan Reid with 21. Setter Lydie van Deursen led all players with 53 assists.

The Cougars and Owls went back and forth in the opening game as Columbia led by just a point at 19-18 late in the set. Back-to-back kills by Carol Berger and Schwentker sparked a timely 4-0 run that helped Columbia take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cougars used a 5-0 run to take a 16-10 advantage in the second game, but William Woods battled back to pull within a point at 22-21. However, Columbia was able to hold on down the stretch and close out the game on a kill by Trinity Ojo and an attack error by the Owls. The Cougars took control early in game three with the help of a 7-1 run that put them up 15-7. Columbia would continue to build its lead from there and finished the match with back-to-back kills by Schwentker.

The Cougars posted 42 kills to go along with a .252 hitting percentage in the match, led by 14 kills from Berger. Columbia also received a match-high 33 assists and 17 digs from van Deursen and Reid respectively.

The Cougars will return to the court tomorrow night for a matchup with crosstown foe Stephens (Mo.) College. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start in Columbia, Mo.
