Men’s soccer wins double overtime thriller

Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team won its fifth straight game in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, defeating American Midwest Conference (AMC) opponent William Woods University in double overtime by a score of 2-1. Columbia, ranked 18th in Tuesday's latest version of the NAIA Top 25, improves to 9-2-2 and 6-0-1 in the AMC with the victory. The loss drops the Owls to 6-6 and 3-2 in league play.

William Woods grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half as Marcelo Carreiro beat Cougar goalkeeper Matt McKenna with 27:25 to play in the opening period. Columbia responded nine minutes later as Antonio Ayres tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season. That score would hold up over the remainder of the half as the Cougars outshot the Owls 7-2 in the first period. Despite a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the final 45 minutes, both defenses kept the score the knotted at 1-1 to send the game into overtime. After ten scoreless minutes in the first overtime period, Columbia's Rafael Ramos took the opening kickoff of the second ten-minute frame and launched a shot from roughly 35 yards out over the outstretched arms of the William Woods keeper to give the Cougars a thrilling 2-1 victory.

McKenna finished with four saves to earn the win in goal for Columbia, including a brilliant save late in the second half to preserve the 1-1 tie. The Owls posted 19 shots to the Cougars' 16 for the game, with Columbia holding a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Cougars will host conference foe Lyon (Ark.) College in their next match on Saturday, October 12th. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will follow the Columbia women's contest.
