Second half hat trick by Ramos lifts Cougars to quarterfinal win

Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat visiting Lyon (Ark.) College by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament. Columbia, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improves to 11-5-3 on the year with the win.

The lone score of the first half came on a corner kick by the Scots as Stuart Bramley was able to beat Cougar goalkeeper Matt McKenna. Lyon would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break after outshooting Columbia 6-5 in the opening period. Both defenses continued to play well throughout the second half until a foul in the penalty box by the Scots gave the Cougars a penalty kick opportunity in the 73rd minute. Rafael Ramos converted the kick to even the score and would add the go-ahead score less than seven minutes later as Columbia took the lead for good at 2-1. Ramos completed a hat trick with his third goal of the contest in the 85th minute to put the game away.

The Cougars finished with a 13-6 shot advantage for the game. McKenna earned the win in goal for Columbia with two saves.

Members of the 2013 AMC All-Academic team were also announced prior to game time. Representatives from Columbia included Danny Baird, John Paul Gronberg, Jovan Ilic, Adam McChesney, Kory McDonald, Zach Oppland, Marko Paunovic, Rafael Ramos, and Inaki Suarez.

The Cougars will move on to face No. 3 seed Hannibal-LaGrange University on Tuesday, November 12th in the AMC Tournament Semifinal round. With a win, Columbia will advance to Friday's tournament championship game to take on the winner of top-seed Park University and No. 4 seed William Woods University.
