Volleyball eliminated by Madonna at Nationals

Box Score Sioux City, Iowa - The Columbia Volleyball team fell to fourth-ranked Madonna (Mich.) University by a score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon at the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championships, presented by J&L Enterprises and CNOS Foundation. The Crusaders defeated the Cougars by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21. Columbia's season comes to an end with an overall record of 30-11, while Madonna improves to 41-1 and advances to take on defending national champion Concordia (Calif.) University in the tournament quarterfinals tonight at 8 pm.

The Cougars battled back from an early deficit in game one to pull within a point at 21-20, but the Crusaders would take the next four points to claim the first set 25-20. Columbia led for much of game two, but Madonna came back late to tie the score at 21 and eventually took set by a score of 25-23. Facing elimination in game three, the Cougars were unable to find a spark as the Crusaders closed out the match with a 25-21 win.

Both teams finished with 38 kills in the match. Trinity Ojo led Columbia with 10 kills, while Emilie Freeman had a match-high 13 kills for Madonna.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) also released their NAIA All-Region Teams earlier today. Ojo and van Deursen were each named to the First Team, while Paula Rosa was selected to the honorable mention team. Visit www.avca.org for more information.
