Men’s soccer ties Baker on the road

Box Score Baldwin City, Kan. - The Cougar men's soccer team tied Baker (Kan.) University 1-1 on Monday night in their first road game of the 2013 campaign. With the tie, Columbia moves to 1-1-1 on the season.

Columbia got on the board in the first half when sophomore Inaki Suarez found the back of net from 20 yards out with 20:18 to play in the period. Both squads would register five shots over the course of the opening 45 minutes, but the Cougars were able to take the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Baker was finally able to pull even just under 15 minutes into the second half after a foul by Columbia resulted in a penalty kick for the Wildcats. Andy Griffin converted the PK to tie the game at 1-1 and that score would hold over the remainder of regulation.

In the two overtime periods, neither defense gave way to the opposing offense as the extra 20 minutes of play did not produce a score for either side. Baker outshot the Cougars 4-1 in the overtime periods and 14 (4 on goal) to 8 (3 on goal) for the match. Senior Matt McKenna posted three saves for Columbia in the contest.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, September 7th when they travel to Dordt (Iowa) College. Match time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. in Sioux Center, Iowa.
