Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's soccer team won its second straight game on Friday night, defeating conference opponent Williams Baptist (Ark.) College by a score of 3-1. Columbia moves to 6-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league play with the win.
After the Eagles scored in the 10
th minute to grab an early 1-0 lead, the Cougars tied the game on a goal by
Clemente Rossi with 33:06 to play in the first half. Columbia would take the lead just over a minute later as
Antonio Ayres lofted a shot over the Williams Baptist goalkeeper to put Columbia in front 2-1. The Cougars narrowly missed another goal in the 24
th minute after
Rafael Ramos and
John Paul Gronberg each hit the crossbar with a shot attempt. Columbia would log 20 shots during the opening period, but was unable to extend their lead heading into the halftime break. The second half proved to be a defensive struggle for both sides before
Rafael Ramos added an insurance goal for the Cougars in the 83
rd minute that marked the final score of the game.
Matt McKenna earned the win in goal as the Columbia defense held the Eagles to just four shots on the night. Leading goal scorer
Marko Paunovic finished with two assists in the contest.
The Cougars will travel to conference newcomer Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University on Tuesday, October 1
st. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will follow the Columbia women's game.
