Cougars start 4-0 in AMC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar Softball team swept their second doubleheader in as many days on Saturday afternoon, defeating American Midwest Conference (AMC) opponent Lyon College by scores of 13-5 and 6-1. With the two wins, Columbia improves to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Scots scored first in game one and led 1-0 after an inning of play. The Cougars took the lead in bottom of the second as starting pitcher Lauren McCroskie delivered a two-run single to left center to bring home Kristin Eiken and pinch runner Kelsi Hill. Columbia added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a solo home run to lead off the inning by Jamie Holmes. Lyon would answer with four runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the fourth to pull within one at 6-5. The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out RBI single by Marli Hayes and picked up five more runs in the fifth for a 12-5 lead. Holmes connected on her second home run of the game and Brittiany Tjarks also homered in the inning. Columbia capped off the victory with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Paxton Welch.

McCroskie earned the win in the circle for the Cougars after allowing five runs in 3.1 innings. Welch entered the game in the sixth and did not allow a run in her 2.2 innings of work. Eiken went a perfect 4 for 4 to lead the Columbia offense, which finished with 16 hits. Holmes, McCroskie, and Tjarks each finished with a team-high three RBI in the game.

Lyon would take another early lead in game two with a run in the bottom of the second inning against Cougar starter Amber Boehme. That score would hold up over the next two innings before Columbia rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth. The Cougars evened the score on a pinch-hit RBI double by Maria Imhoff and Carly Spalding followed with a two-run single to right. Hayes capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to center for a 5-1 Columbia lead. The Cougars went up 6-1 in the top of the sixth as Imhoff came through again with a double to left to bring home Whitni Howell.

Boehme worked all seven innings to pick up the complete game victory, giving up a run on three hits while striking out four. Spalding, Hayes, and Imhoff had two hits and two RBIs apiece to lead the Columbia offense.

The Cougars will travel to Missouri Valley College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 18th. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Marshall, Mo.
