Columbia shuts down Warner for doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lake Wales, Fla. - The Cougar Softball team bounced back from two losses on Wednesday to sweep a doubleheader from Warner (Fla.) University on Friday afternoon. Columbia defeated the Royals 8-2 in the first game of the day and took game two by a score of 5-1. With the two victories, the Cougars improve to 13-10 on the season.

After a scoreless first inning to begin game one, Columbia pushed three runs across in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Lauren McCroskie followed by a two-run home run by Brittiany Tjarks. The Cougars would go on to score in the next four innings as they built a 7-0 lead, including back-to-back RBI doubles by Jamie Holmes and Carly Spalding with two outs in the fourth. The seven-run cushion was more than enough for McCroskie, who allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. Maria Imhoff entered in the sixth and pitched two perfect innings to cap off the win. Spalding and Taylor Atwood each finished with three of the Cougars' 10 hits in the game. McCroskie, Tjarks, and Spalding added two RBI's apiece as well to lead the Columbia offense.

The Cougars used a three-run first to take control of game two as Atwood delivered a sac fly for Columbia's first run. Kristin Eiken followed with an RBI triple to center and Whitni Howell came through with a single to right for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars took advantage of a pair of errors by Warner to pick up runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 5-0 lead and starting pitcher Tiffany Urwiler allowed just one unearned run over seven innings to earn the complete game victory. Eiken had two hits and Holmes added three stolen bases to lead the Columbia offense.

The Cougars will resume American Midwest Conference (AMC) action on Tuesday, April 1st when they host 15th-rankeed Park University. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 2:00 pm at Antimi Black Field in Columbia.
