Cougars score 30 runs in sweep of Stephens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar Softball team swept a doubleheader from crosstown foe Stephens College on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 24-11 overall on the season and 16-2 in conference play. Columbia took game one by a score of 20-3 in five innings and posted a 10-2 five inning victory in game two. With the two wins, the Cougars are now tied with William Woods University for first place in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) standings.
 
After the two teams were postponed back on April 8th, the first game of the day resumed in the top of the second inning with Columbia leading 3-2. With two outs in the frame, the Cougars added to their lead with four runs on a two-run single by Kristin Eiken and a fielding error by the Stars. The Columbia offense erupted for ten more runs on nine hits in the third inning as Carly Spalding got the scoring started with a three-run double to center. Jamie Holmes followed with a two-run single and Maria Imhoff added a two-run triple for a 17-2 advantage. The Cougars plated their final three runs on an RBI triple by Lauren McCroskie and a two-run inside the park home run by Kelsi Hill. McCroskie allowed two runs on four hits in four innings to pick up the win in the pitching circle and improve to 5-4 on the year. Six different Cougars had at least two hits and one RBI, led by Eiken with four hits and Spalding with four RBI.  
 
Columbia took another early lead in the second game of the day with two runs in the first on an RBI triple by Marli Hayes and RBI single by Taylor Atwood. The Cougars scored in every inning, including four runs in the fourth, on their way to their 13th win in 14 games. Amber Boehme allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings to earn the complete game victory for Columbia. Holmes and Hayes each collected two hits and two runs scored to lead the Cougar offense, which finished with 11 hits and four stolen bases.
 
Columbia will hit the road for a pair of AMC doubleheaders to close out the week, starting with a matchup against Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Thursday, April 17th. The Cougars will then take on Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University on Friday, April 18th.
