Box Score 2 Des Moines, Iowa-The Columbia College volleyball team opened up the season with a 5
th set win over No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan University at the Grandview University tournament. Columbia, ranked ninth in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, defeated the Wildcats by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, and 15-12. Columbia followed their first match with a win over Olivet Nazarene University. After dropping the opening set, the Cougars rebounded to win the next three straight with final scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21. Columbia starts the season with a 2-0 record.
Junior
Polina Severina led the Cougars with 16 kills over IWU, followed by
Paula Rosa with 15 and
Brooke Simpson with 11. Rosa also chipped in with 18 digs while
Brooke Simpson,
Mikah Simpson, and
Lydie van Deursen had a combined 47. Setter van Deursen led the Cougars with a match high 60 assists.
In their second match of the day, Rosa, Severina and
Brooke Simpson again led the Cougars with 17, 15 and 12 kills, respectively. The Simpson sisters combined for 41 digs in the four-set match.
Lydie van Deursen dished out 53 assists and as a team the Cougars posted eight aces.
The Volleyball squad is back in action tomorrow as they continue play in the Grandview University tournament. At 10 a.m. they take on Trinity Christian College and then at 2 p.m. they face the University of St. Francis (Ill.).
