Cougars Finish Classic Undefeated- Severina Named MVP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Columbia, Mo. - The No. 9 ranked Columbia Cougar volleyball squad swept through the competition for the second straight day to go 4-0 at the Hampton Inn Classic this weekend. The Cougars posted 3-0 victories over Benedictine College and Indiana University East. The Cougars are now 8-0 on the season.

Against the Ravens of Benedictine College, Columbia won by scores of 25-20, 25-8, and 25-13. After a back and forth first set, the Cougars dominated the second and third giving the Ravens no chance for a comeback. Senior Paula Rosa and Junior Polina Severina hit double digits with Rosa digging a match high 14 and Severina blasting 13 kills. Senior Setter Lydie van Deursen dished out a match high 33 assists.

The Ravens were led by Patricia Moura with five kills and eight digs.

The Cougars took care of business against the Red Wolves of Indiana University East winning by scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-20. The squad took charge in the first set of the match, but the second and third was a different story. In the second match, the Red Wolves made a four-point comeback midway to make the score 22-21. The teams continued to battle, but the Cougars won with an game-ending shot by Manon Soraru. The third set mirrored the second. The two squads were neck and neck throughout the match until the Cougars made a four point run to make the score 24-20. The Cougars were able to finish the set when there was an attack error on the Wolves. Senior Brooke Simpson led the squad tying a season high and match high 15 kills and 10 digs. Lydie van Deursen tacked on a match high 33 assists in the win.

Following the game an all-classic team was named. Members of the all-classic team include; Brooke Simpson and Lydie van Deursen from Columbia College, Wendy Romero, Juliana Barros, and Wanessa Siqueira from Park University, Patricia Moura from Benedictine College, Kacey Wahlig and Tori Johnson from Lindenwood-Belleville, Eloisa Sales from Bethel University, Madison Yoder from Indiana University East, Mackenzie Worden from Arizona Christian, and Jenna Schudel from Robert Morris University-Chicago.  Columbia's own Polina Severina was named the Most Valuable Player.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, September 2nd for a non-conference matchup with Evangel University. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
