Paunovic Powers Cougars to a 2-1 Victory over No. 15 Missouri Valley

Box Score Columbia Mo. - The Columbia Cougar soccer team picked up their first win of the season by defeating No. 15 ranked Missouri Valley tonight. Columbia came from behind to beat the visiting squad 2-1. The Cougars improve to 1-2-0 on the season while Missouri Valley drops to 2-1-0.

The Cougars would fall behind in the first half when the Vikings' Melquiades Mora scored in the 32nd minute of play. Senior forward Marko Paunovic put Columbia on the board with the first goal of the season in the 42nd minute with a goal to tie up the game. Junior forward Lakin Kehde assisted on the play.

The two squads would remain knotted at one goal apiece until the second half. In the 57th minute Paunovic would score another goal that was crossed by Liam Cain and assisted by Rasmus Juul Pedersen. The Vikings tried to answer back in the 75th minute when sophomore midfielder Renan Santos fired a shot for the tie, but was saved by Daniel Ainsworth. Paunovic's two goals would prove to be enough for the Cougars to walk away with the win.

Missouri Valley outshot Columbia College 17 (ten on-goal) to five (two on-goal) for the match. Daniel Ainsworth picked up nine saves in goal for Columbia.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, September 9th when they host Westminster College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Soccer Stadium.
