Cougar Women’s Soccer Picks up Pivotal Senior Day Win over Pirates

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team captured a pivotal American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory tonight, defeating Park University 4-0. The win hands the Pirates their first conference loss of the season and breaks their eight game winning streak. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 11-3 overall and 8-0 in AMC play, pushing them past the Pirates into first place in the conference standings. Park falls to 10-3 on the season and 8-1 in league play.

The Cougars scored in the 11th minute of play as Yuko Shinomiya notched her second goal of the season. Kelli Westhues was fouled just outside the eighteen, setting up a free kick for the Cougars. Westhues drew the defense back, passing it out to Katelyn Palmer who then kicked it to Shinomiya who fired it into the right hand corner from 21 yards out.

Laurie Frew quickly extended the Cougar lead to 2-0 two minutes later, tallying her conference leading 16th goal of the season.
The Cougars carried the 2-0 lead into the half time break after outshooting Park 11-7, putting five on the net.

After 21 minutes of scoreless action in the second half, Westhues connected with Molly Burke to find the net, giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage. Frew stuck again with one minute remaining in the match to allow Columbia to pull away with the 4-0 shutout victory.

Flavia Rosado (11-3) recorded the win in goal for Columbia, posting eight saves in the shutout, Columbia's ninth of the season. Park posted 14 shots (eight on-goal) for the match, compared to 18 shots (nine on-goal) on the night for the Cougars.

Wednesday night's contest also marked Columbia's final home game of the 2015 regular season. Westhues and Mallory Page were honored prior to game time for Senior Night. Westhues and Page were a part of the inaugural class four years ago. In four seasons the Cougars have won 48 games, claimed two conference titles and competed in the National Championship twice.

The Cougars return to the field Friday, October 16th when they hit the road to take on Harris-Stowe State University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
