Cougar Women Falls to Park despite 29 Points from Corpening

Parkville, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team suffered an 84-75 loss to American Midwest Conference foe Park University on the road Tuesday night. The Cougars fall to 17-9 on the season and 13-7 in conference play with the loss.

Tierney Seifert drained a three on Columbia's first possession to put the Cougars up, but Park answered back with a 6-0 run to put the Pirates ahead 6-3 at the 17:39 mark. Kayla Washington fired back with a three of her own to tie the score at six, and sparked an 11-5 run capped off by an Aqua Corpening three pointer to make the score 14-8. Columbia took their first double-digit lead of the game at 20-10 with 13:07 left in the half as Corpening scored a pair of points at the free throw line. The Pirates were able to pull within seven at the 8:49 mark at 26-19, but two Columbia baskets extended their lead back out to double-digits at 30-19 with less than eight minutes left. Park hung around and pulled within four at the 1:16 mark after the completion of a three-point play to make it 39-35. The two teams traded basket for basket on the next two possessions. Corpening extended the Cougar lead with another three, but Sydney Heard beat the buzzer as Columbia took a 44-39 advantage into the halftime break.

The Cougars shot 57 percent in the opening half, led by Corpening with 19 points.

With two minutes erased in the second half, the Pirates pulled within a point at 46-45. After trading baskets, Park went up 49-48, and with 9:00 remaining, led 58-55 after a basket in the lane. Columbia scored five straight points to go back up 60-58, but the Pirates came crawling back and led 63-61 at the 6:45 mark. Columbia regained the lead with 6:17 left after a free throw at 64-63, but Park was able to stop the Cougars on their next possession and led the rest of the game. The Pirates made 10-of-14 from the free throw line in the last three minutes to put the game away.

The Cougars finished the night shooting 45 percent from the field while holding the Pirates to a 43 percent clip. However, Park was able to capitalize on Columbia's miscues and converted their 15 turnovers into 20 points. Aqua Corpening had a career high 29 points on six of nine shooting from behind the arc, leading all scorers, with one rebound and two assists. Ashley Fisher posted a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds. Caprese Marshall led Columbia in assists after tossing out four. The Pirates were led by Channell Mackey who had 26 points on the night.

Columbia will return to the court later this week when they travel across town to take on Stephens College on Thursday, February 19th. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
