Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia Cougar soccer squad picked up their fifth win of the season tonight as they defeated American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe William Woods University 2-0. The Cougars improve to 5-2 on the season and move to 2-0 in AMC play while the Owls fall to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
After 31 minutes of scoreless play,
Luiz Guilherme Stein found the back of the net, taking advantage of an Owl miscue in the box, to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
After being fouled in the box,
Vadim Cojocov looked to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage on a penalty kick, but Owl goalkeeper Conor Cable made an outstanding save, diving to his left, to keep Columbia from extending their lead.
The Cougars would carry the 1-0 advantage into the locker room after outshooting the Owls 12-7 in the first half.
Edin Campara added a second tally for the Cougars in the 50
th minute as he blasted a shot in goal, passed by Guilherme Stein.
The Cougar offense continued to pressure the Owls over the next 40 minutes, but was unable to add to their lead, pulling away with the 2-0 shutout victory.
Columbia and William Woods were even with 21 shots and seven shots-on-goal apiece.
Junior keeper
Iain McTurk (4-0) earned the win in goal with seven saves.
The Cougars will continue AMC action Saturday, September 19
th when they host St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
