Cougar Volleyball Picks up Two Wins to Stay Perfect on the Weekend

Bourbonnais, Ill. - The 12th-ranked Columbia Cougar volleyball squad earned two victories for the second straight day to go 4-0 at the Holiday Inn Express Classic this weekend. The Cougars posted a 3-0 victory over Davenport University (25-13, 25-23, 25-18) and finished the day with a 3-1 match win over (RV) Cornerstone University (18-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16). The Cougars are now 10-4 on the season.

Against the Panthers of Davenport, Penny Liu led the way with a match high 14 digs while Polina Severina and Amber Graham also posted double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Setter Sashiko Heredia led all players with 35 assists while Mikah Simpson recorded 11 digs.

The Cougars struggled in set one as Cornerstone jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Columbia worked to close the gap to 18-14, but the Golden Eagles scored seven of the next 11 points to take set one, 25-18. Columbia bounced back to win three straight sets, 25-15, 25-19, and 25-16, to stay perfect on the weekend.

Liu led the Cougars with her fourth double-double of the season, posting 20 kills and 11 digs. Eirini Chatziefstratiadou also ended in double-digit kills, chipping in 11.  Heredia dished out a match-high 48 assists while Simpson led all players with 18 digs. Severina notched double digit digs as well with 12.

The Cougars return to the court September 21st when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to face conference foe St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
