Columbia, Mo. – The 25
th-ranked Columbia College women's soccer team dropped another close game today, falling to Ashford University 3-2 at R. Marvin Owens Field. Columbia drops to 7-3 on the season with the loss.
The Cougars and Saints were evenly matched in the first half, logging six shots and just three shots-on-goal between them.
After a scoreless first half, Ashford finally found the board as Paloma Oliviera kicked in her team leading 4
th goal of the season in the 50
th minute of play. Ashford added a second goal 12 minutes later after senior midfielder Danielle Boyd found the lower left corner of the net to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage.
Columbia cut the deficit in the 74
th minute as
Katie Cook found the net after striking a rebounded shot off of the Saints goalkeeper. However, the Saints regained their two goal lead after Danielle Boyd tallied her third goal of the season.
The Cougars came roaring back in the 79
th minute as senior
Kelli Westhues headed in a perfectly crossed corner kick by
Laurie Frew, making it a 3-2 ballgame. With the clock winding down, Columbia continued to apply pressure, but was unable to pull off the comeback win.
Columbia outshot the Saints 21-6, posting nine shots-on-goal.
Flavia Rosado (7-3) took the loss in goal for the Cougars with two saves.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, September 30
th when they host American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Lindenwood University-Belleville. Game time is set for a 7:00 p.m. start at R. Marvin Owens Field.
