Columbia, Mo. – After falling to Lindenwood University-Belleville last year in the American Midwest Conference Championship game, the Cougar men's soccer team came out for revenge, defeating the Lynx 2-1 tonight. With the win, Columbia improves to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in AMC play while Lindenwood-Belleville falls to 5-4 on the year and 2-2 in league play.
Neither team would be able to crack the goalkeepers in the first half as Columbia's
Iain McTurk made six outstanding saves while Lindenwood-Belleville's Christian Espitia had five saves to keep each team off of the board heading into the halftime break.
Five minutes into the second half,
Mitchell Conning rifled a shot from way up top to score his fourth goal of the season giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. Conning scored again in the 78
th minute of the game, striking the ball to find the net after a perfect cross by
Kory McDonald.
The Lynx would cut the Cougars lead in half with 32 seconds remaining in the game after a foul kick, but Columbia would hold off for the win.
Lindenwood-Belleville outshot the Cougars 18-14 for the game. McTurk (6-0) had another impressive night in goal, posting seven saves to earn the win.
The Cougars return to action this Saturday, October 3
rd when they host AMC foe Williams Baptist College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
