Ceraj Leads Cougars in Comeback

Box Score Walnut Ridge, Ark. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's soccer team traveled to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, to take on Williams Baptist (Ark.) University in an AMC contest. The game ended in a 4-4 tie after the Cougars were able to make a miraculous four goal comeback in the second half to tie the game. Columbia College improves to 6-4-1 on the season and 5-0-1 in AMC play.

The Cougars came out in the first half creating several scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. Williams Baptist started the scoring 11 minutes into the game when Thiago Sooma was able to beat the Cougars keeper off of a pass from Diego Santillan to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. They were able to add to their lead just a few minutes later when Victor Prieto found Matheus Allonso who placed it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Eagles got their last goal of the half, twenty minutes into the game, after Matheus Lima was called for a foul and given a yellow card. Thiago Sooma took the free kick and found Fernando Lisboa in the box who was able to head the ball into the back of the net to put Williams Baptist ahead 3-0 heading into the halftime break. The Cougars had five shots in the half including two shots on goal.

The start of the second half was a lot like the first with the Eagles scoring an early goal three minutes into the half to put Williams Baptist ahead 4-0. However, the Cougars were not gong down without a fight. They were able to cut the lead to 4-1 just three minutes later off of an own goal from the Eagles. Matija Ceraj added a second goal for Columbia College with just under 30 minutes left in the game when he received a pass from Mitchell Conning and was able to beat the Williams Baptist keeper for his first goal of the season. The Cougars cut the lead to 4-3, just three minutes after the goal from Ceraj, after earning a corner kick. Nick Horne took the corner for the Cougars and was able to find Michael Mayberry who headed the ball into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

The Cougars continued to apply pressure to the Eagles late in the game as they searched desperately for an equalizing goal. They were able to complete their comeback with just over two minutes left in the game when Michael Mayberry crossed the ball into the Eagles box finding Matija Ceraj who was able to head the ball into the back of the net and tie the game at four.

Columbia College had all of the momentum going into the overtime period after scoring four straight unanswered goals. They created several scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net. The Cougars outshot the Eagles 5-0 in overtime and had one shot on goal.

Iain McTurk was in goal for the Cougars tonight recording three saves in the contest, as the Columbia College stays unbeaten in their last seven games.

The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, October 8th when they take on Freed Hardeman University in an AMC matchup. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field in Columbia.
