Fulton, Mo. – Tonight the Columbia College volleyball team traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in the AMC Game of the Week. The Cougars have been on fire since the beginning of October and were able to the sweep the Owls in the three straight sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-21). Columbia College has not lost a set in the past five games while improving their overall record to 13-8.
The first set of the match lived up to the hype. The Cougars used a 5-1 run to jump out to a 16-11 lead in the game and looked like they were going to squeeze out a victory. The Owls stuck around and would not let the Cougars finish them off as they went on a 7-0 run and took the lead late in the set. Both teams exchanged points as neither side could break away. With the game tied at 24,
Sashiko Heredia picked up a huge kill for the Cougars and they were able to get the final point to solidify the 26-24 victory. Columbia College had 18 kills on 28 attacks in the set.
The second set was a lot like the first as neither side could gain an advantage over the other. The Cougars were finally able to break away from the Owls after going on a 5-1 run late in the set with the score tied at 20. Columbia College had 14 kills with a .433 attacking percentage in the set while holding the Owls to a .242 attacking percentage.
In the third set, the Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after three straight kills. The Cougars battled back and were finally able to take the lead after a kill from
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou with the score tied at 14. They were able to use that momentum and never let the Owls back into the game as they took the third set 25-21.
The Cougars were led by
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou who had a match high 14 kills and
Sashiko Heredia who had 33 assists.
Gabriela Walton had a great game defensively as she was able to pick up a match high 12 digs. Additionally,
Peiyi Liu, the NAIA and AMC Attacker of the Week, had another great game with 11 kills and eight digs.
Columbia College is back in action on Friday, October 14
th when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the Grandview Tournament. This is a big weekend for the Cougars as they will take on three ranked opponents starting on Friday when they take on #23 Indiana Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. and #9 Grand View (Iowa) College at 7 p.m.
