Box Score 2 Des Moines, Iowa – This afternoon the Columbia College volleyball team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the Grand View Tournament. The Cougars took on #23 Indiana Wesleyan University in their first match of the day and #9 Grand View (Iowa) University in their second. The Cougars were defeated in both contests and fall to 13-10 on the season.
The Cougars were defeated by the Wildcats in the first match of the day in three straight sets (26-24, 25-20, 25-21). Columbia College came out in the first set looking to continue their winning streak and had a lead late in the game but Indiana Weslyan was too much for the Cougars to handle and they took the game 26-24.
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou led the Cougars with four kills in the set. The second game was very similar to the first with both teams exchanging points early. Neither side could break away until the Wildcats were able to go on a 5-1 run with the score tied at 14 and cruised to a 25-20 victory.
In the third set, the Cougars were able to jump out to an early 8-1 lead to start the game. However, the Wildcats attack was too much for the Cougars and they completed the three game sweep with a 25-21 victory. The Cougars were led by
Peiyi Liu, the NAIA and AMC Attacker of the Week, as she had 10 kills and eight digs in the match.
Sashiko Heredia had another great game for the Cougars as well as she picked up a match high 32 assists in the contest.
Columbia College took on the ninth ranked Grand View (Iowa) University Vikings in their second match of the day. The Cougars lost to the Vikings in four sets (25-16, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23) despite playing a great match. In the first set, the Cougars were defeated 25-16. The Vikings were able to jump out to an early lead and the Cougars were unable to catch up. Columbia College had 10 kills on 32 attacks in the set.
The second set was a different story than the first, both teams played a close match and neither side could break away. With the score tied at 25, Grand View was able to get two straight points and took the game by a score of 27-25. The Cougars bounced back in the third set and were able to defeat the Vikings in a very close game to stay alive in the match. Columbia College went on an 8-1 run late in the set to solidify their 25-20 victory.
The Cougars looked to use that momentum from the third set and came out firing in the fourth. They were able to jump out to an early lead in the game and matched the Vikings point for point. Grand View broke away from the Cougars late in the game but Columbia College went on a 4-0 run to tie the game up at 23. The Cougars looked like they would take the fourth set but Taylor Wells of the Vikings picked up two straight kills to finish off Columbia College.
The Cougars were once again led offensively by
Peiyi Liu who had 15 kills to go along with
Eirini Chatziefstratiadou's 11 kills and
Caroline Clifford's 10 kills. Liu also had 11 digs in the match which was second on the team to
Gabriela Walton who had 16 digs for the Cougars.
Sashiko Heredia did another great job of running the offense in the second game as she picked up a match high 46 assists in the contest.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow morning on the second day of the Grand View Tournament. Columbia College will take on Wayland Baptist (Texas) University at 10 a.m. and #19 University of Jamestown (N.D.) at 12 p.m.
