Box Score Batesville, Ark. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's soccer team traveled to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on Lyon (Ark.) College in their final regular season game of the year. The Cougars were defeated by the Scots in a very physical game that ended in a 1-0 victory for Lyon. With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 9-6-2 on the season and 8-1-2 in conference play as they head into the postseason.
This game was an important one for both sides and it showed in the physical play of the first half. There were 10 total fouls and three yellow cards handed out in the first 25 minutes of the game including two to the Cougars. Despite the Cougars dominating the possession, they were unable to find the back of the net in the first half and took a 0-0 tie into the halftime break. Columbia College outshot the Scots 8-2 in the half and had four shots on target.
The second half was very similar to the first with both sides picking up several fouls early in the period. The Cougars had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard including two corner kicks in the first five minutes of the half but could not beat the Scots keeper. The Scots battled back and started to take control midway through the second half. They were able to score the only goal of the match with just under 10 minutes left in the game after Columbia College was called for a foul. Benjamin Elton took the free kick for the Scots and was able to find the head of Jose Poblete in the box to solidify the 1-0 victory. The Cougars outshot the Scots 20-8 and had nine shots on target.
Iain McTurk was in goal for Columbia College recording three saves in the contest.
The Cougars will host an American Midwest Conference quarterfinal match up on Saturday, November 5th at 3 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field. A complete bracket and pairings will be released later this weekend.
