Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 14
th ranked Columbia College women's soccer team took on Lyon (Ark.) College in an AMC quarterfinal matchup. The Cougars looked to carry their success from the regular season into the game and they were able to do just that as they defeated the Scots by a final score of 5-0.
In the first half of the game, the Cougars came out ready to play from the opening whistle and created several scoring opportunities early in the match. They looked as if they were going to roll over the Scots like they have to most teams they have played this season but the Lyon goalkeeper came to prove that the 8-0 loss to Columbia College in their previous game was just a fluke. She was all over the net in the first half making several incredible saves to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard early in the match.
Columbia College was finally able to break through in the 18
th minute when
Lucy Kingsley found the back of the net for her 10
th goal of the season. The goal came after the Cougars were able to work the ball deep into the Scots half before finding the hands of the Lyon keeper. Kingsley never gave up on the play and as the keeper went to punt the ball she mishandled it dropping it right onto the foot of Kingsley who slid it into the wide open.
Kelsey Mirts added a second tally before the halftime break when
Laurie Frew found
Tiffany Weaver making a run across the Scots touchline. Weaver beat a defender and played a low line driving cross into the box finding Mirts who was able to guide the ball into the back of the net for her 13
th goal of the season. The Cougars outshot the Scots 25-1 in the half and had 10 shots on goal.
The second half was much of the same for the Cougars as they came out of the break looking to put the game out of reach.
Katelyn Palmer put Columbia College ahead 3-0 just eight minutes into the half when
Katie Cook played a ball to
Jordan Poire who found Palmer making a run up the middle of the field. Palmer beat several defenders and knocked it past the Scots keeper for her sixth goal of the season.
Molly Klein added her seventh goal of the season with just under 20 minutes left in the half when she received the ball at the top of the box and ripped a low line driving shot into the back of the net to put the Cougars ahead 4-0 in the game.
Taylor Hagenhoff finished off the scoring for Columbia College with just over a minute left in the game when she received a pass from
Erin Collier and blasted it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Flavia Rosado and
Madison Boyken split time in goal tonight for the Cougars as the two combined for the team's 16
th shutout of the season. Columbia College has gotten great play in goal from these two keepers all season long as the Cougars rank first in the NAIA in total shutouts.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday, November 7
th when they host Missouri Baptist University in the semifinals of the AMC tournament. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
