Columbia, Mo. – Last night the Columbia College women's basketball team was able to pick up their first win of the season in a 100-35 win over Central Christian College of the Bible in the Cougars vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic Presented by Cost Cutters. The Cougars were back at it again tonight on the second day of the tournament as they took on Milligan (Tenn.) College in Columbia. The Cougars were able to defeat the Buffaloes by a final score of 88-62 and improved to 2-0 on the season.
The first quarter was a tight one as both teams struggled offensively to start the game but settled in as the quarter progressed. With the Buffaloes trailing 4-6 in the game, Sarah Robinson stepped her game up for Milligan as she scored eight straight points, including two three point shots, to put them up 12-6 with a little over six minutes left in the quarter. The Cougars continued to struggle offensively until
Jordan Alford was able to sink two three pointers in a row to cut the Buffaloes lead down to three with just under three minutes left in the quarter.
Columbia College found themselves down by one to start the second quarter but went on a 5-0 run in the first minute of the period to take a 26-22 lead. Both teams battled back and forth for the rest of the half as neither side could gain an advantage over the other. However, with the game tied at 30, the Cougars forced several turnovers and were able to go on a 7-1 run to take a 37-31 lead into the halftime break.
The Cougars came out of the break and looked as if they were ready to take control of the game.
Ashlee Marlatt got the scoring going for Columbia in the third quarter when she was able to convert on her layup opportunity 11 seconds into the half. The Cougars played great defensively in the quarter forcing the Buffaloes to turn the ball over several times which helped Columbia push their lead to 13 heading into the fourth.
The Buffaloes came out in the final quarter looking to cut down on the Cougars lead but a three pointer from
Ashlee Marlatt to put Columbia ahead by 16 was a deflating blow to Milligan and they were never able to recover. The Cougars played great defense in the fourth quarter holding the Buffaloes to just seven points as they were able to close out the game and pick up their second win in a row.
The Cougars had five players in double figures tonight with
Jordan Alford picking up a game high 23 points while knocking down 3-4 from outside the arc. Additionally,
Morgan Brandt had 20 points,
Ashlee Marlatt had 11 points,
Raegan Wieser had 11 points, and
Mai Nienhueser had 11 points to go along with a team leading eight rebounds to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, November 12
th when they travel to Georgetown, Kentucky, to take on Georgetown (Ky.) College in their first road game of the season. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
