Box Score 2 Lake Wales, Fla. – The Cougar Softball team split a doubleheader with non-conference opponent Warner Universityon Wednesday. Columbia fell to the Royals 4-3 in game one before winning game two by a score of 4-1. The Cougars move to 15-15 on the year with the split.
The Royals scored the first run of the game in the second inning on an RBI single by shortstop Brittany Winget. The Cougars answered right back with a run in the fourth inning on an in the park home run by Molly Carter.
Columbia notched another run in the fifth inning as Julianna Waldner singled to center, moved to third on a base hit by Kaylee Brueggeman, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Sullivan. The Cougars extended their lead to two runs in the sixth inning after Carter doubled to right center and scored on a single by Waldner.
Two walks and two hits allowed the Royals to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth which put the home team up one headed into the seventh.
Columbia had one last opportunity as Sullivan doubled down the leftfield line with two outs, but pitcher Chelsie Valentine caused an infield popup to end the game.
Paxton Welch pitched the full six innings, scattering eight hits and striking out two. Carter and Waldner had two hits apiece to lead the offense while Sullivan and Brueggeman had one hit.
The Cougars grabbed a quick lead in game two, platting two runs in the top of the first inning. Carly Spalding reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a double by Carter. After advancing to third on the throw home, Carter scored on a sacrifice fly by Allyson Metz.
Columbia stretched their lead to three in the third inning after Carter ripped a triple to right field and scored on an RBI double by Natalie Dummitt.
The Cougars would score their fourth run of the game in the fourth to go ahead 4-0. With two outs, Brueggeman and Sullivan hit back-to-back singles and Spalding reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. Carter rounded out the scoring for Columbia with a base hit to bring in Brueggeman.
The Royals scored their lone run in the seventh inning as Sydney Coleman singled, advanced to second on an error in the infield, and scored on a base hit by Kaitlyn Ficarrotta.
Amber Boehme earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits and striking out two in seven innings of work. The Cougars racked up 12 hits in the contest, led by Sullivan, Carter and Dummitt with three apiece.
The Cougars will take on Webber International University tomorrow, March 31st in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT in Babson Park, Fla.
