Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the seventh ranked Columbia College men's soccer team took on Central Baptist (Ark.) University in their first AMC matchup of the season. The Cougars were able to beat the Mustangs by a score of 4-0 and improve to 2-4 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 1-4 on the season.
Nick Horne started off the scoring for the Cougars after
Michael Mayberry was able to win a ball that was played over the top of the defense and was taken down in the box by the Mustang keeper.
Nick Horne stepped up and calmly placed his shot in the lower right hand corner of the net to put the Cougars up 1-0.
The Cougars picked up their second goal of the game when
Juan Pablo Agredo received a ball from
Zachary Felz and was able to beat the keeper and tap it in for his first goal of the season to put Columbia College up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Zachary Felz picked up his second assist of the first half when he was able to find
Michael Mayberry who was streaking across the box and was able to chip it over the goalie for his third goal of the season and put the Cougars up 3-0 20 minutes into the game.
Nick Horne tallied his second goal of the game after the Cougars were able to earn a free kick from 25 yards away. The junior midfielder stepped up and hit a rocket of a shot that bounced off of a Mustang defender and into the back of the net to put the Cougars up 4-0 heading into the halftime break.
Columbia College applied pressure throughout the entire first half outshooting the Mustangs 10-0 with six shots on goal.
The Cougars were able to hold their lead throughout the second half and continued to apply pressure to the Mustangs defense. Columbia College outshot the Mustangs 6-4 in the second half and had two shots on goal.
Iain McTurk was in goal for the Cougars tonight recording one save in his first shutout of the season.
Edin Campara was named the AMC Offensive Player of the Week yesterday. Campara, a 6-0 senior forward from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzogovina, ignited the Cougars' offense on Saturday at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). The Cougars picked up a 4-1 win to break into the win column, and Campara factored in each goal, scoring three of them for his first hat trick of the season, and assisting on the fourth goal.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, September 17
th when they take on William Woods (Mo.) University. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
