Ottawa, Kan. – On Tuesday, the Columbia College women's soccer team broke into the top 25 rankings in the first poll of the season. The Cougars are now the 15
th ranked team in the NAIA which is the highest ranking ever for the women's team. Tonight the team traveled to Ottawa, Kansas, to take on Ottawa University. The Cougars were able to add to their winning streak in a 2-1 win over the Braves. With the win, Columbia College improves to 7-0-2 and remains unbeaten on the season.
The Cougars got off to a great start in the game jumping out to an early 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the match.
Katelyn Palmer started off the play by winning the ball from the Braves defender just outside the box and playing it back to
Jordan Poire who swung a cross into the middle of the box.
Kelsey Mirts settled the ball onto her right food and beat the keeper to the lower left hand corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
The Braves fought back and tied the game up in the 33
rd minute after working the ball in the Cougars half and earning themselves a corner kick. Caroline Jenkins played the corner to the near post and Sydney Alexander was there to put a head on the ball and tie the game up at one. The goal was the first allowed by the Cougars since the first game of the season.
The second half was neck and neck throughout as both teams split the possession. With the game tied late in the second half
Kelsey Mirts won the ball at the top of the box and hit a rocket of a shot off the crossbar. The ball bounced straight back into play and found
Laurie Frew who blasted the ball into the top left hand corner of the net to solidify the victory for the Cougars. Columbia College outshot the Braves 17-12 in the game and had 12 shots on target.
Flavia Rosado was in goal tonight for the Cougars recording three saves in the victory. This was another great game in goal for the senior goalkeeper as she continues to build on her impressive season.
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, September 24
th when they take on Missouri Baptist University. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field in Columbia.
