Cougars Battle Owls to 1-1 Draw

Fulton, Mo. – Tonight the Columbia College men's soccer team was back in action when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in an AMC match. The Cougars, who came into this game on a nine game winning streak, were able to improve to 10-2-1 on the season after the game ended in a 1-1 draw. With the win, Columbia remains unbeaten in AMC play at 6-0-1.

This afternoon the NAIA national office announced the sixth NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll for the 2017 season. The Cougars, who ranked 21st in the last poll, were able to move up four spots to 17th after defeating Midland (Neb.) University on Saturday by a score of 3-0.

Columbia College came out in the first half of the match and were able to get on the board in the first five minutes of the game when Nick Horne knocked in his third tally of the season to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. They continued to play well as the half progressed and created several scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net as the score remained 1-0 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half of the game, the Cougars were able to control the pace early and did not allow the Owls to get anything going through most of the half. However, with just under two minutes left in the game William Woods was able to finish one of their chances to tie the game at one and send the match to overtime.

Both sides came out in overtime and created several scoring opportunities throughout each period but neither side was able to find the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Nicolau Neto was in goal for Columbia as the senior made five saves in the contest.

The Cougars are back in action on Friday, October 13th when they play host to the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in an AMC match. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
