Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 17th ranked Columbia College men's soccer team was back in action when they played host to the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in an AMC matchup. The Cougars, who are coming off a 1-1 draw against William Woods on Tuesday, were able to improve to 11-2-1 on the season after defeating the Pirates by a final score of 4-1.
Columbia College came out in the first half and were able to control the pace early in the contest. It took them just 13 minutes into the game to get on the board when Pere Adrian Servera made a run down the sideline before cutting it back into the box and getting taken down by the Pirates defender earning the Cougars a penalty kick. Adam Du Toit took the kick for Columbia and he calmly buried his shot in the bottom right corner to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Du Toit was back at it again just a few minutes later when he played the ball across the field to Servera who put a great cross onto the back post where Du Toit was waiting to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The Pirates were able to cut into the Cougars lead late in the period and the score was 2-1 heading into the halftime break.
Columbia College continued to push the tempo in the second half but had a tough time finding the back of the net early. They were able to increase their lead to 3-1 in the 72nd minute when Michael Mayberry was able to finish off a ball from Adam Du Toit for his fifth tally of the season. Mayberry was back at it again with five minutes left in the game when he dribbled around several defenders before sliding it past the Pirates keeper to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Park did their best to get back into the game but were unable to capitalize as Columbia improved to 7-0-1 in AMC play.
Nicolau Neto was in goal for the Cougars as the senior made three saves in the contest.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday, October 16th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
