Fulton, Mo. – This afternoon the fifth ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars, who came into this game with a perfect 13-0 record on the season, were unable to stay unbeaten as they were defeated by the Owls by a final score of 2-1 to fall to 13-1 on the year and 7-1 in conference play.
This afternoon the NAIA national office announced the sixth NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll for the 2017 season. The Cougars, who ranked fifth in the last poll, remained fifth in the latest poll after defeating Stephens College by a final score of 11-0 and then defeating the University of Jamestown (N.D.) by a final score of 1-0 last week.
In the first half of the game, the Cougars came out and had a tough time getting anything going in the rain. The Owls were able to take advantage of Columbia's miscues and took a 1-0 lead in the match with 22 minutes remaining in the half. The Cougars did their best to get back into the game before the halftime break but were unable to find the back of the net.
It did not take long for Columbia to get things going in the second half as Molly Klein was able to finish off a goal six minutes into the period to tie the game at one. However, just a minute later the Owls were able to regain the lead as they drove down the field and took a 2-1 lead in the match. Columbia applied a heavy amount of pressure as the game progressed but were unable take advantage of their opportunities as William Woods handed the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Erin Jones was in goal for Columbia as the sophomore made one save in the match.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday. October 13th when they play host to the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in an AMC match. The game is set to start at 4:30 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
