Columbia, Mo. – The fifth ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in the AMC Game of the Week. The Cougars, who suffered their first loss of the season at William Woods on Tuesday, were able to bounce back into the win column as they defeated the Pirates by a final score of 3-0 to improve to 14-1 on the season and 8-1 in conference play.
In the first half of the game, the Cougars came out and controlled the pace early in the half. It took just three minutes for Columbia to find the back of the net as Lucy Kingsley used her flip throw-in to find Laurie Frew in the middle of the box who was able to head the ball into the back of the net for her 19th tally of the season. The Cougars were able to add to their lead with eight minutes remaining in the half when Kaitlyn Tambke played a ball over the top to Kelsey Mirts who slid the ball across the mouth of the goal to Molly Klein who was able to finish it off for her sixth goal of the season to give Columbia a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Cougars came out in the second half and had a tougher time controlling the possession. The Pirates were able to create several scoring opportunities early in the half but were unable to find the back of the net. Columbia College picked it up as the half progressed and were able to extend their lead to 3-0 midway through the period when Kelsey Mirts was able to finish off her 17th goal of the season to solidify the Cougars 14th win of the season.
Madison Boyken and Erin Jones split time in goal tonight as the two combined for their 11th shutout of the season.
The Cougars are back in action on Monday, October 16th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in an AMC match. The game is set to start at 11 a.m.
