Georgetown, Ky. – The eighth ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action today when they traveled to Georgetown, Kentucky, to compete in the 2017 Boneyard Brawl. The Cougars played two matches on the first day notching a 3-1 set (25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 25-9) win over the Union (Ky.) College Bulldogs and then defeated the 24th ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University Tigers in four sets (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23) to improve to 28-4 on the season.
In the first match of the day, both sides came out and exchanged points throughout the entirety of the first set. However, with the score tied at 22 the Cougars were able to capture three straight points and took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 victory.
In the second set, Columbia came out and took an early 9-4 lead. They held a 14-9 advantage midway through the game but the Bulldogs battled back cutting the lead to 15-13. The Cougars responded quickly to the run from the Bulldogs and use a 6-2 run of their own to go up 21-15 late in the set. Union did not back down as they cut the lead to two points late in the game but that would be as close as they would get as Columbia would take set two by a score of 25-21.
After dropping a close third set by a final score of 26-24, the Cougars led 2-1 in the match heading into the fourth game. Columbia jumped to a quick 11-2 lead to start the fourth set. The Cougars kept putting the pressure on as they led 15-5 midway through the game. The Bulldogs did their best to get back into the set but Columbia was too much to handle down the stretch as they solidified their 27th win of the season with a 25-9 victory.
Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford (20) and Jordan Wolfe (11) who each recorded double-digit kills. In addition, Gabriela Walton had 21 digs and Yamilet Velazquez recorded 44 assists.
In the second match of the day, the Cougars came out and had a tough time getting anything going in the first set and found themselves down 13-7 early. Despite being down, Columbia College battled back and were able to cut the Tigers lead to one midway through the game before Campbellsville used a 4-0 run to take a five point lead late in the set. However, the Cougars never let the Tigers get too far ahead and used a 10-2 run to end the game to claim the first set by a final score of 25-22.
Both sides came out in the second game and exchanged points to start the set. With the score tied at 11, the Cougars were able to use a 7-1 run and held an 18-12 lead late in the game. The Tigers were able to score the next point to cut Columbia's lead to five but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars took a 2-0 set lead in the match with a 25-17 win.
Columbia College fell in the third set by a final score of 25-22 and looked to bounce back in the fourth. The Bulldogs were able to take an early 10-6 lead over the Cougars in the game but Columbia came storming back and tied the set at 16. Both teams exchanged the next few points but with the score tied at 22 the Cougars were able to use a 3-1 run to take the fourth set by a final score of 25-23 and solidified their second win of the day.
Columbia's attack was led by Caroline Clifford (16), Jordan Wolfe (11), and Pamela Jaime (10) who all finished with double digit kills in the match. Defensively, the Cougars were led by Yamilet Velazquez (11) and Gabriela Walton (16) who both finished with double digit digs. Velazquez also finished with a match high 47 assists.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 28th when they continue play in the 2017 Boneyard Brawl. Columbia is set to play Indiana Wesleyan (Ind.) University at 10 a.m. (EST) followed by a 3 p.m. (EST) start against 17th ranked Georgetown (Ky.) College.
