Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the eighth ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they took on Lyon (Ark.) College in their final game of the regular season. The Cougars were able to defeat the Scots by a final score of 13-0 to improve to 17-1 on the season and 11-1 in the AMC. Following a draw between Park (Mo.) University and William Woods (Mo.) University earlier this week, the women's soccer team was named the AMC regular season champions for the fifth straight season and have clinched the number one seed in the AMC Championships for the fourth time in program history. They have also clinched a spot in the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships Opening Round.
This game served as senior day for the Cougars and before the match Columbia College honored the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. Seniors Laurie Frew, Jordan Piore, and Tifanny Weaver were recognized before the game.
It took the Cougars just nine and a half minutes into the game to get on the board as Kaitlyn Tambke played a ball over the top to Molly Klein who was able to put a shot of goal. The Scots keeper made a great save on Klein's shot but Tiffany Weaver was there to finish off the rebound for her sixth goal of the season to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. The Cougars were back at it again just four minutes later when Laurie Frew beat several defenders before sliding it past the Scots keeper for her 21st goal of the season. Columbia College added six more goals in the half including two tallies from Lucy Kingsley (9), one from Molly Klein (10), one from Sarah Taylor (2), one from Abigail Meyer (2), a second from Tifanny Weaver (7), and one from Samantha Bassler (4) to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Cougars were back at it again to start the second half as Abigail Meyer was able to finish off a pass from Hannah Crone for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Samantha Bassler added a 10th to Columbia's total 12 minutes later as she was able to finish off her 5th of the season. The Cougars added a second goal from Laurie Frew (22), one from Caramia Feidler (2), and a third from Samantha Bassler (6) before the end of the game to solidify Columbia's 17th win of the season.
Madison Boyken was in goal this afternoon for Columbia make three saves in her second straight solo shutout.
The Cougars will be back in action on Friday, November 3rd when they host the AMC Quarterfinals match against the eighth seed in the conference. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
