Cougars Advance to AMC Semifinals

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the seventh ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they played host to Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in an AMC Quarterfinals match. The Cougars, who earned the first seed in the AMC Championships after going 11-1 in conference play, were able to defeat the Trojans by a final score of 9-0 to improve to 18-1 on the season.

Prior to the match, the American Midwest Conference announced the Academic All-Conference awards. To be eligible for the Academic All-Conference honors, student-athletes must be in their second semester at their AMC institution and have at least a 3.0 GPA. For their efforts in the classroom, Katie Cook, Laurie Frew, Lucy Kingsley, Molly Klein, Emma Laney, Kelsey Mirts, Jordan Poire, Kaitlyn Tambke, Tiffany Weaver, and Hannah Crone were all recognized. In addition, Katie Cook was also recognized as a member of the AMC Champions of Character team.

The Cougars came out in the first half of the game and dominated the Trojans from the opening whistle. It took just nine minutes for Columbia to get on the board as Laurie Frew found Molly Klein in the box who was able to rifle a shot past the Trojans keeper and into the back of the net for her 11th goal of the season. Frew and Klein were back at it again 16 minutes later when Frew received the ball at the top of the box before finding Klein in front of the goal who touched it past the Trojans keeper and into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead midway through the half. The pair hooked up one final time in the half with 12 minutes remaining in the period as Frew found Klein for a third time inside the box who was able to slide her shot into the back of the net for her third tally of the game. Frew was able to add a fourth goal to Columbia's lead when Lucy Kingsley made a run down the sideline before cutting it back to the top of the box where she found Frew waiting. Frew was able to hit a low line driving shot into the back of the net for her 23rd goal of the season. Jordan Poire added one final tally before the end of the period and the Cougars took a 5-0 lead into the locker room.

Columbia College was able to carry over their momentum from the first half into the second half and controlled the possession for most of the period. Molly Klein was able to add her fourth goal of the contest 22 minutes into the second half when Tiffany Weaver blasted a shot off the crossbar before the rebound bounced to Klein who was able to knock it into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead. With the goal, Klein becomes the first player in the program to score four goals in a single match. The previous record of three has occurred 16 times since the program was established in 2012.

Columbia College was able to add three more goals in the half including tallies from Lucy Kingsley, Tiffany Weaver, and Caramia Fiedler to solidify a spot in the AMC Semifinals.

Madison Boyken was in goal for the Cougars picking up her fourth solo shutout of the season.

The Cougars are back in action on Monday, November 6th when they host the winner between Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University in the AMC Semifinals. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
