Georgetown, Ky. – The tenth ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action today as they continued play in the 2017 Boneyard Brawl. The Cougars who won both of their matches yesterday, defeated the Indiana Wesleyan (Ind.) University Wildcats in their first match in a 3-0 set (25-16, 25-23, 25-14) and then fell to the 17th ranked Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers in a 3-1 set (25-19, 21-25, 18-25, 15-25). Columbia went 3-1 on the weekend and currently holds a 29-5 record on the season.
In the first match both teams exchanged points for most of the match finding themselves tied at 12 midway through. The Cougars were able to break free using a 13-4 run to end the first set with a 25-16 victory over the Wildcats.
To start the second set Columbia took a quick 13-4 lead. The Wildcats crept their way back into the match cutting the lead to two late in the game, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cougars won set two 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set the Cougars had 12 kills on 27 attacks for a .333 attacking percentage. Ariadne Borges, Zori Curry, and Pamela Jaime all tallied 3 kills, while Caroline Clifford chipped in two. In addition, Yamilet Velazquez had a set high nine assists and Gabriela Walton pitched in five digs. After winning the third set by a score of 25-14, the Cougars swept the Wildcats to win their first match of the day.
Columbia was led by Yamilet Velazquez who recorded seven kills, 20 assists, and eight digs. In addition, Caroline Clifford recorded eight kills, while Gabriela Walton pitched in 11 digs to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
In the second match of the day neither team could find much separation from the other as they battled back and forth throughout the match. Columbia was able to use an 8-2 run to take a 20-14 lead late in the game. The Tigers cut the lead to four, but would not be able to overcome the Cougars as they won the first set 25-19 to take a 1-0 lead in their fourth match of the weekend.
After dropping set two by a score of 25-21, the Cougars were tied 1-1 going into the third set. Columbia was tied with the Tigers 4-4 early in the third set. The Cougars went on a 6-3 run to take a 10-7 lead, but the Tigers quickly tied it back up 10-10. Columbia found themselves trailing 20-15 late in the game. The Cougars did their best to get back in the game, but were not able to overcome the Tigers as they fell in the third set by a score of 25-18. The Tigers led the match 2-1 going into the fourth set.
In the fourth set the Tigers dominated the game from the start. They took an early lead and never looked back as they won the fourth set by a score of 25-15 to win the match 3-1 and hand the Cougars their 5th loss of the season.
Columbia was led by Caroline Clifford who recorded double-digit kills (12) and digs (12). In addition, Gabriela Walton tallied 17 digs, while Yamilet Velazquez had 33 assists.
The Cougars are back in action Thursday, November 2nd when they host Central Baptist (Ark.) College on Senior Day. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
