Columbia, Mo. – The seventh ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action tonight as they hosted the Central Baptist (Ark.) College Mustangs in an AMC matchup. The Cougars swept the Mustangs (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) to improve to 30-5 on the season and 10-1 in conference play.
This game served as senior day for the Cougars and before the match Columbia College honored the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. Seniors Zori Curry, Peiyi Liu, Johanna Mueller, and Gabriela Walton were recognized before the game.
The Cougars jumped to a quick 6-1 lead to start the first set. Columbia continued to apply the pressure as they led 20-6 late in the game. The Mustangs could not slow the Cougars down as they went up 1-0 in the match with a 25-11 victory.
To start the second set both teams exchanged points as they were tied at 10. Columbia used a 12-3 run to separate themselves from the Mustangs and take a 22-13 lead late in the game. The Cougars were able to secure the final points to win the second set 25-14 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started much like the second with each team going back and forth. The Cougars were able to use a 9-3 run to take a 15-9 lead over the Mustangs midway through the game. Columbia was led by Yamilet Velazquez who recorded 12 digs and 27 assists. In addition, Caroline Clifford tallied 10 kills on the night.
