Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the 21st ranked Columbia College men's soccer team was back in action when they played host to the Midland (Neb.) University Warriors on Homecoming Day. The Cougars, who came into this game on an eight game winning streak, were able to improve to 10-2 on the year after defeating the Warriors by a final score of 3-0.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and created several scoring opportunities early but neither side was able to find the back of the net. The Cougars were finally able to get on the board 24 minutes into the game when Matheus Lima won the ball in the middle of the field. Lima played a ball to Adam Du Toit who slid the ball across the mouth of the goal to Joey Koetting who tapped it past the Warriors keeper for his fifth goal of the season to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. Columbia's lead stood for the rest of the period and they took 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Midland came out of the locker room for the second half and controlled the possession early in the period. The Cougars settled in as the half progressed and were able to add to their lead with 22 minutes remaining in the game when Aaron Noel found Adam Du Toit in the box who settled it onto his right foot and fired the ball into the back of the net for his third of the season to give Columbia a 2-0 lead. The Cougars were able to add one final goal with six minutes left in the game when Matija Ceraj was able to finish off a penalty kick for his first goal of the season to solidify Columbia's ninth straight win.
Nicolau Neto was in goal for the Cougars as the senior keeper recorded two saves in his sixth shutout of the season.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, October 10th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in the AMC Game of the Week. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
