Cougars Defeat Jimmies in Physical Contest

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the fifth ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they played host to the University of Jamestown (N.D.) on Homecoming Day. The Cougars, who came into this game with a perfect 12-0 record, were able to stay unbeaten on the season as they defeated the Jimmies by a final score of 1-0.

In the first half of the match, the Jimmies were able to come out and control the pace early as they posted three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. Jamestown continued to apply the pressure as the half progressed but were unable to find the back of the net as Erin Jones made five saves in the period for the Cougars. Columbia College was finally able take a 1-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the half when Molly Klein was taken down by a Jimmies defender in the box. Laurie Frew stepped up and took the penalty for the Cougars and was able to knock it into the top left corner for her 18th goal of the season.

Columbia College was able to carry over their momentum from the end of the first half into the second and applied pressure to the Jimmies back line early in the period. Both sides began to get physical in the half and a total of three yellow cards were given to the Cougars within a two minute stretch of the game. Although both sides created several scoring chances as the half progressed, neither team was able to find the back of the net and Columbia was able to solidify their 13th straight win.

Erin Jones was in goal for Columbia this afternoon as the sophomore made eight saves in her third straight solo shutout.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, October 10th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
