Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 16th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University Trojans in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to defeat the Trojans by a final score of 91-41 and improved to 8-5 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
Columbia College came out in the first quarter and took it to the Trojans early. They were able to score the first eight points of the game and held an 11-3 lead midway through the quarter. The Cougars played tough defense in the period and forced Hannibal-LaGrange to take difficult shots as they held a 23-7 lead heading into the second.
Columbia College carried their momentum over into the second quarter and were able to grow their lead to 20 with just over six minutes remaining in the half. The Trojans battled back and were able to cut the lead to 17 late in the period but a 16-7 run to end the half propelled the Cougars to a 52-26 lead heading into the halftime break. Columbia College shot 51.43 percent from the field in the half and were led by Sarah Walters who had a game high 17 at the break.
The second half started similar to the first half as the Cougars came out of the locker room and scored the first 14 points of the period. They continued to play well as the quarter progressed and held a 74-32 lead heading into the fourth. The Trojans did their best to get back into the game in the final quarter but were unable to cut into the deficit as the Cougars cruised to their fifth conference win of the season.
Sarah Walters led the way for Columbia as she finished with a game high 21 points in the contest. To go along with Walters, Morgan Brandt added 13 point, Raegan Wieser dropped in 10 points, and Jordan Alford finished with a game high seven rebounds to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
Columbia College is back in action on Saturday, December 30th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
