Box Score Conway, Ark. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Central Baptist (Ark.) College in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. The Cougars were able to defeat the Mustangs by a final score of 6-4 and improved to 6-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Cougars got off to a quick start in the game as they were able to score two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in the contest. However, the lead did not last long as the Mustangs answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at two runs apiece. Central Baptist picked up one more run in the bottom of the third but the Cougars scored runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and held a 4-3 lead through five innings of play.
Despite being down, the Mustangs battled back into the contest and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four. The Cougars struggled to get anything going in their half of the seventh but an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning from
Ward Mershon proved to be the difference in the game as it propelled them to their first conference win of the season.
Zach Maskill was the starting pitcher for Columbia College allowing just six hits and four earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. In addition to Maskill,
Andrew Warner went 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
Columbia College returns to the diamond tomorrow, February 25
th when they take on Central Baptist College in the last two games of the three game series. The double header will take place at Victory Field in Conway, Arkansas, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
