Cougars Sweep Eutectics to Open AMC Play

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College softball team was back in action when they played host to the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics in their first AMC doubleheader of the season. The Cougars, who won the 2017 Gulf Shores Invitational over the weekend, were able to extend their winning streak to nine straight games after beating the Eutectics 22-0 in the first game and 25-1 in the second game. With the sweep, Columbia College improves to 13-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

The Cougars came ready to play in their home opener and took it to St. Louis College Pharmacy from the first batter of the game. They combined for 42 hits throughout the two game sweep including 13 doubles, a triple, and eight home runs in eight innings of at-bats. Columbia College picked up great performances from everyone at the plate but perhaps the most impressive batters were Carly Spalding, Alexandra Linck, and Allyson Metz. Spalding went 7-10 with six RBI's and four runs scored, Linck finished 4-6 with three home runs and 10 RBI's, and Metz ended the day going 6-8 with three runs scored and eight RBI's throughout both games.

Paxton Welch and Lauren McCroskie got the starts in the circle for the Cougars with Welch picking up her fifth win and McCroskie racking up her seventh win of the season. In the first game of the day, Welch allowed just one hit and zero earned runs while striking out five in four innings of work. Freshman Kaitlyn Nottleman came in to close out the game in the fifth inning for the Cougars. In the second game, McCroskie went the full five innings allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out five in the contest.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, March 14th when they travel to Parkville, Missouri, to take on Park (Mo.) University in an AMC double-header. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second game to immediately follow.
