Box Score 2 Babson Park, Fla. – This afternoon the third ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action when they traveled to Babson Park, Florida, to take on Webber International (Fla.) University in a nonconference doubleheader. The Cougars, who came into this game on a 17 game winning streak, split the series with the Warriors taking the first game by a final score of 7-0 and dropping the second game by a final score of 8-7. With the split, Columbia College improves to 22-3 on the season.
In their first game against the Warriors, the Cougars were able to put together a 15 hit outing in the 7-0 win over the Warriors. Columbia scored a run in the top of the first inning and then added five runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a three run homerun from
Molly Carter and a two run homerun from
Olivia Denslow to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead through three innings of play. They were able to add one more run in the top of the fourth inning when
Carly Spalding scored on a
Theresa DeCosty sacrifice fly and shut down the Warriors for the rest of the game to cruise to their 18
th straight win.
Paxton Welch was the starting pitcher for the Cougars in this one picking up her 10
th win of the season in a three hit complete game shutout. Offensively, Columbia was led by
Carly Spalding who went 4-4 with three doubles and
Molly Carter who went 2-4 with three RBI's.
In the second game against the Warriors, both sides struggled to get anything going in the early innings. However, the Cougars were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when
Julianna Waldner scored on a sacrifice from
Theresa DeCosty. Columbia College added one more run in the inning and then rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom half of the frame. The Warriors, who had a tough time finding the holes in the Cougars defense all day long, offense came alive in their half of the fourth and they went off for three runs to cut Columbia's lead to 5-3. Despite giving up three runs, the Cougars bounced back quickly and scored one run in each of the next two innings but a five run rally in the bottom of the sixth was just enough to hand Columbia their first loss in 19 games.
Lauren McCroskie was the starting pitcher in this one allowing eight hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. In addition,
Karli Leeper went 2-3 with an RBI and
Theresa DeCosty went 1-3 with two RBI's to round out the top performers for Columbia.
Prior to the games,
Molly Carter was named this week's AMC Softball Player of the Week. Carter, a 5-6 sophomore infielder out of Hickman High School, went 6-for-12 (.500) in four games, she scored three runs, ripped three doubles, and drove in nine tallies on the week. With today's contests included, Carter is currently riding a 17 game hitting streak.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Lakeland, Florida, to take on the 13
th ranked Southeastern (Fla.) University Fire in a nonconference doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
