Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they hosted Williams Baptist (Ark.) College in the final two games of a three game series. The Cougars were able to complete the three game sweep over the Eagles after defeating them in the first game by a final score of 10-2 and then winning the second game by a final score of 12-1. With the sweep, Columbia College improves to 11-7 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
In their first game against the Eagles, Williams Baptist got off to a quick start just like they did on Friday and scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead in the contest. However, the Cougars were able to score two runs in the bottom of the first and added two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead through two innings of play. Despite giving up two runs in the first two innings, Columbia's starting pitcher
Jeremy Rettig settled into his rhythm and seemed to be unhittable as the game progressed. The Cougars were able to add some insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and closed out the Eagles in their final at-bats to cruise to their second win of the weekend.
Jeremy Rettig allowed just five hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work to pick up his second win of the season. Offensively, Columbia College was led by
Ethan Howser who went 2-5 with three RBI's and
Blade McKee who went 4-5 and also had three RBI's.
In the second game of the day, the Cougars dominated from the start. Columbia went off for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added four runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to an early 9-0 lead in the game. The Eagles bounced back in the top of the third with a run of their own but a three run fourth inning from the Cougars highlighted by a two run double by
Tanner Allen followed by an RBI single from
Ward Mershon propelled Columbia to their eighth win in their last nine games.
Cody Ebert was the starting pitcher for the Cougars allowing just three hits and one earned run in six innings of work. In addition to Ebert,
Andrew Warner went 3-4 with five RBI's including a three run blast in the second inning and
Tanner Allen went 3-3 with four RBI's to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
Columbia College is back in action on Tuesday, March 7
th when they host the University of St. Mary (Kan.) in a double header at Atkins Park. The first game against the Spires is set for 3 p.m. with the second game to immediately follow.
