Hannibal, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Hannibal, Missouri, to take on Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in an AMC double header. The Cougars were able to sweep both games against the Trojans taking the first game by a final score of 8-0 and winning the second game by a final score of 9-0. With the sweep, Columbia College improves to 14-7 on the season and 8-0 in conference play.
In the first game of the day, the Cougars got off to a quick start in the first inning as they went off for four runs in the top of the frame to take an early lead in the contest. They were able to add two more runs over the next two innings and held a 6-0 lead through three innings of play. The Trojans did their best to get back into the game but a run in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the seventh solidified Columbia's fifth win in a row.
Zach Maskill was the starting pitcher for the Cougars allowing just five hits and zero earned runs in the complete game shutout. Offensively,
Blade McKee went 2-5 with two RBI's and
Andrew Warner went 2-5 with two runs scored to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
Columbia was able to carry over their momentum from the first game into the second as they took advantage of the Trojans miscues and put five early runs on the board. They added two more runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a two run double from
Andrew Warner and held a 7-0 lead through four innings of play. The Trojans struggled to get anything going on offense as the game progressed and two more late runs from Columbia College propelled them to their AMC leading eighth conference win of the season.
Jeremy Rettig was on the mound in this one allowing just five hits while striking out seven in the complete game shutout. In addition to Rettig,
Kenny Piper went 2-5 with two runs scored and
Tanner Allen went 2-4 with three RBI's to lead Columbia.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, March 10
th when they face Hannibal-LaGrange in the final game of the three game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Hannibal, Missouri.
