Box Score 2 Fulton, Mo. – This afternoon the second ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC doubleheader. The Cougars, who came into this game on a seven game winning streak, were defeated in the first game by a final score of 4-3 and then bounced back to capture a 7-5 come from behind victory to improve to 30-5 on the season and 15-1 in conference play.
In their first game against the Owls, the Cougars came out in the first inning and were able to score an early run when
Carly Spalding scored on a
Molly Carter sacrifice hit to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. William Woods responded quickly to the Cougars run and were able to score a run of their own in the bottom of the second, but a two run third inning from the Cougars gave them a 3-1 lead through three innings of play. Despite being down, the Owls battled back in the game and were able to score two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the sixth inning to hand Columbia their first conference loss of the season.
Paxton Welch was in the circle for the Cougars in this one as the senior pitcher allowed seven hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Offensively, Columbia was led by
Theresa DeCosty who went 2-4 with an RBI and
Carly Spalding who went 2-4 with two runs scored.
In their second game against the Owls, the Cougars had trouble getting anything going at the plate through the first five innings of the game. William Woods was able to take advantage of Columbia's struggles at the plate and rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead in the contest. The Cougars were finally able to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning when
Allyson Metz hit a two run homerun to cut the Owls lead to 3-2 through six inning of play. With one final inning left in the game, Columbia rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to solidify the come from behind victory.
Lauren McCroskie picked up her 15
th win of the season in this one as she allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in seven innings in the circle. In addition,
Alexandra Linck went 1-3 with two RBI's and
Karli Leeper went 2-4 with an RBI to lead Columbia at the plate.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday, April 14
th when they host Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University in an AMC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second game to follow at Anitmi Softball Complex.
