Cougars Sweep Doubleheader in Batesville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Batesville, Ark. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on Lyon (Ark.) College in an AMC doubleheader. The Cougars were able to sweep the Scots as they took the first game by a final score of 5-2 in 10 innings and the second game by a final score of 4-1. With the sweep, Columbia College improves to 30-15 on the season and 20-6 in conference play.

In their first game against the Scots the Cougars were able to put together an 11 hit ballgame in their come from behind victory. Lyon College got off to a quick start in the first inning of the game as they rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-0 lead into the second. The Cougars had a tough time getting anything going through the first five innings of play but were able to get on the board in the top of the sixth when Ethan Howser came around to score on an Andrew Warner double to cut the Scots lead in half. Columbia was able to add one more run in the top of the seventh inning when Martin Kalabek scored on an RBI single from Jordan Wright to tie the game at two. Neither side was able to score over the next few innings but a three run rally in the top of the 10th highlighted by a two-run homerun from Andrew Warner solidified the 19th conference win of the season for the Cougars.

Jeremy Rettig (6-2) was the starting pitcher in this game for Columbia as he struck out two batters while allowing three hits and two earned runs in one inning on the mound. J.W. McGraw (3-2) came into relieve Rettig in the second inning and gave the Cougars five solid innings as he struck out four batters while allowing just three hits and no earned runs. Following McGraw, Craig Smith (3-3) came into the game to pitch the final four innings and picked up the win after striking out three batters and allowing just two hits. Offensively, the Cougars were led by Jordan Wright when went 3-4 with an RBI and Andrew Warner who went 2-5 with three RBI's.

In their second game against the Scots, Lyon College was once again able to get on the scoreboard first as they scored an early run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead in the game. However, the Cougars were able to bounce back quickly and rallied for two runs in the top of the third inning behind a two-run double from Andrew Warner to give Columbia a 2-1 lead. The Cougars were able to add two runs in the top of the fourth inning and one final run in the top of the seventh inning to complete the two game sweep.

Zach Maskill (6-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as he struck out six batters while allowing just six hits and one earned run in his fourth complete game of the season. In addition, Blade McKee went 1-4 with a run scored and Andrew Warner added another two RBI's (65) to his impressive season totals to lead Columbia at the plate.

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow, April 23rd when they take on Lyon College in the final game of the three game series. The contest is set to start at 1 p.m.
