Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they played host to Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) in the final two games of a three game series. The Cougars, who were defeated in yesterday's game by a final score of 2-0, were able to bounce back in today's contests as they took the first game by a final score of 8-4 and then won the second game by a final score of 13-6. With the sweep, Columbia improves to 26-12 on the season and 16-5 in conference play.
In their first game against the Lynx, the Cougars struggled to get anything going through the first few innings and allowed Lindenwood-Belleville to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Columbia's bats finally came alive in the third inning and the Cougars were able to score three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, and three runs in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead into the sixth. The Lynx responded to the Cougars offensive outburst with a run of their own in the top of the sixth but ultimately Columbia would add one more run late in the game to break their two game losing streak.
Jeremy Rettig was the starting pitcher in this one allowing just four hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings on the mound. Offensively, Columbia was led by
Tanner Allen who went 2-3 with two runs scored and
Justin Randle who went 2-3 with a run scored.
In their second game against the Lynx, neither side was able to get anything going through the first few innings of play. The Cougars were able to break into the scoring column in the bottom of the third inning when they rallied for four runs behind a three run homerun from
Andrew Warner to give them a 4-0 lead. The Cougars were able to add one more run to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Lynx rallied for six runs between the seventh and the eighth innings. However, Columbia was able to score eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings to complete the two game sweep.
Cody Ebert was on the mound for the Cougars in this one allowing just six hits and two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. In addition,
Andrew Warner went 2-4, including two three run homeruns, with six RBI's and
Blade McKee went 3-5 with four RBI's to lead the Cougars at the plate.
Columbia College is back in action on Wednesday, April 12
th when they host Central Methodist (Mo.) University in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. at Atkins Park.
