Conway, Ark. – This afternoon the second ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action when they traveled to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Central Baptist (Ark.) College in an AMC doubleheader. The Cougars, who swept Lyon (Ark.) College yesterday, were able to extend their winning streak to seven straight games after defeating the Mustangs in the first game by a final score of 8-0 and then winning the second game by a final score of 10-1. With the sweep, Columbia improves to 29-4 on the season and 14-0 in conference play.
In their first game against the Mustangs, the Cougars were able to put together a 12 hit outing in the 8-0 win. Columbia opened the scoring in the fourth inning when
Molly Carter hit a grand slam and then added one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to solidify their sixth straight win.
Paxton Welch was in the circle for this one as the senior pitcher allowed just three hits in the complete game shutout for her 12
th win of the season. Offensively, Columbia was led by
Molly Carter who went 3-4 with five RBI's and
Rachel Sullivan who went 2-3 with two runs scored.
In their second game against the Mustangs, both sides struggled early to get anything going offensively. However, the Cougars were able to break into the scoring column in the top of the third inning when
Karli Leeper hit a two run homerun over the right field fence scoring
Allyson Metz to give Columbia a 2-0 lead. The Cougars continued to hit the ball well as the game progressed and added three runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, one run in the sixth, and three runs in the seventh to complete the two game sweep. Lauren McKroskie picked up her 14
th win of the season in this one allowing six hits and one earned run in six innings in the circle. In addition,
Karli Leeper went 3-5 with three RBI's and
Alexandra Linck went 5-5 with two RBI's to lead Columbia at the plate.
The Cougars return to the field on Tuesday, April 11
th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on William Woods (Mo.) University in an AMC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow.
