Clermont, Fla. – The second seeded Columbia College softball team was back in action tonight when they took on Corban (Ore.) University in their second game of the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series in Clermont, Florida. The Cougars, who defeated Ottawa (Kan.) University on Saturday by a score of 2-1, were unable to keep their 18 game winning streak alive as they were defeated by the Warriors by a final score of 5-0. With the loss, Columbia College falls to 47-6 on the season.
The Cougars had a tough time offensively in the game as they were held to just five hits in the contest. The Warriors were able to get on the board early in the top of the second inning scoring one run in the frame and adding two runs in each of the next two innings to take a 5-0 lead into the fifth. Columbia College did their best to get anything going over the final few innings but were unable to bring anyone across the plate as the Cougars dropped to 1-1 in the double elimination tournament.
Lauren McCroskie (22-2) was the starting pitcher in this game for Columbia College as the senior struck out two batters while allowing six hits and three earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Paxton Welch (22-4) came into relieve McCroskie in the third inning and struck out one batter while allowing five hits and two earned runs in the final 4.2 innings of the game. Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Olivia Denslow who went 1-1 with a base hit and a walk.
Columbia College will return to the diamond tomorrow, May 30
th when they continue play in the 2017 NAIA Softball World Series. The Cougars will take on Southern Oregon University in an elimination game at 3 p.m. CDT.
